Department of Biology, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a scientific assistant position in bioinformatics for analysis of large structural variations associated to the evolution of primate genomes commencing 01.09.2019.

Description of the scientific environment
The successful candidate will be part of the Regenberg research team that develops highly sensitive methods for detection and analysis of circular DNA in yeast, animals, healthy and diseased tissue of human. The successful candidate will be working in close contact with other scientists in bioinformatics and experimentalists that conducts experimental evolution with circular DNA in a eukaryotic model. The project will be carried out at the Section for Ecology and Evolution, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen.

Project description
Extrachromosomal DNA circles are known from tumors where they carry proto-oncogenes and can induce tumorigenesis. However, our recent data suggest that circular DNA is a common mutation in healthy eukaryotic cells. The project aims at describing how this otherwise poorly studied group of mutations affects the evolution of genomes. Emphasis will be put on mapping of synteny changes in primate genomes and determining the most likely paths for their establishment. This will be done by reconstruction of ancestral chromosomes and rearrangements of selected primate genomes, and next model and map rearrangements in these species that can be explained circular DNA.

Principal supervisor is associate professor, Birgitte Regenberg, Department of Biology, bregenberg@bio.ku.dk, Direct Phone: 35321680.
