PhD Scholarship in In-Situ NMR based Metabonomics of Microbial Secondary Metabolites

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Ph.d. & forskning
Storkøbenhavn

Frist 20. oktober 2019

We offer a PhD fellowship at the Department of Chemistry at the Technical University of Denmark. The PhD project is part of the Center for Microbial Secondary Metabolites, CeMiSt and will be executed at the NMR Center DTU under the supervision of Charlotte Held Gotfredsen.

CeMiSt is a Center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The Center started 1st of January 2018 and will run for six years with an option for a four-year extension. The Center is based at the Technical University of Denmark and hosted by Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (DTU Bioengineering). Three DTU departments and 10 senior faculty participate in the Center and >10 PhD students and postdocs will be hired. The purpose of CeMiSt is to unravel the biological role of microbial secondary metabolites in natural microbiological communities. The Center is led by Professor Lone Gram.

We are seeking a candidate to study the secondary metabolite profile from microbial sources using mainly NMR spectroscopy as the analytical technology and metabonomics tools for data mining to track and extract data on the production and diversity of secondary metabolites. You will be involved in a fun, highly interdisciplinary PhD project on microbial natural products. You will engage with many other scientists within CeMiSt, which is a very productive scientific environment with strong international connections and also be part of the NMR Center DTU a large DTU Campus infrastructure.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your PhD project will contribute to our understanding of the role and occurrence of secondary metabolites on microbial interactions and evolution. You will explore the diversity of the secondary metabolites profiles and their dependence on the microbial community assembly from which they are obtained. In-situ NMR spectroscopy will be the main analytical technique used. Metabonomics and datamining with be important for the project and correlation with orthogonal genomic data will be an important part in collaborations within CeMiSt.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree in chemistry/engineering/mathematics with prior experience in computer science or NMR spectroscopy. Experience in metabonomics/metabolomics would be an advantage. However, a keen interest in applying analytical and computational tools to mine big data is important. Most importantly, the candidate should be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be confident in both written and spoken English. Expected starting date: December 2019.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

We offer
