Declaration of interest - PhD scholarship in “Physical activity and sleep assessment in young people using multisenor data fusion”

Syddansk Universitet (SDU)

Ph.d. & forskning
Fyn

The research unit for Exercise Epidemiology at the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics www.sdu.dk/iob) invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship to be filled as soon as possible.

Engagement in physical activity and sufficient sleep are essential for the health of young people. An important starting point for studying sleep and physical activity in children and adolescents is valid assessment tools that can be feasibly used in free-living environments in large scale.
Over the past years we have worked systematically to utilize epoch-per-epoch accelerometry- and ambient skin temperature data from devices mounted to the trunk, thigh, and wrist for 24-hours during multiple consecutive days for assessment of habitual physical activity. For example, combining these measures we can monitor wear compliance and characterize sit-to-stand transitions, and classify activities such as lying down, sitting, standing, walking, running, and bicycling with very high sensitivity and specificity.

In the project, the PhD scholar will lead a validation study in children and adolescents. Participants will undergo a structured protocol in the laboratory and in addition wear an ambulatory (portable) polysomnography system in combination with accelerometry, gyroscope, and temperature sensors attached to body in free-living conditions.
Based on this work, the PhD scholar will work with the development of algorithms to assess physical activity and sleep characteristics, and apply this work to free-living data with the purpose to summarize descriptive sleep data among a newly collected large sample of Danish children and adolescents.

The project team is multidisciplinary with experts in physical activity epidemiology, public health, sleep medicine, and data science.
