Head of Center for Health Data Science

Københavns Universitet (KU)

Ph.d. & forskning

Computational Biology and Medicine
A position as Head of Center (part-time) is vacant at the new Center for Health Data Science at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) at the University of Copenhagen
The medical and biological research field as well as its societal complement is overwhelmed by data from new high-throughput techniques that either should be analyzed separately or integrated with phenotypic data, for example from hospitals. At our Faculty, we are already involved in various aspects of data science with strong interest and expertise in bioinformatics, systems biology, medical informatics and biostatistics, but also areas like sustainability and climate where the need is growing.

However, with the wealth of new data and methods several strategic areas must be expanded innovatively to realize the research potential of SUND as a whole. Thus, to make the most of big data, we need to complement our expertise in biosciences with data management, communication (dissemination and visualization), computation, machine learning and statistics, as well as new data security models, ethics and privacy – in addition to new educational activities. Therefore, we now set out to develop a new SUND Health Data Science Center.

The Center’s major aim will be to catalyze more effective ways of deriving knowledge from new and existing data across SUND and its collaborators and stakeholders. We aim to create a shared analytics infrastructure and knowledge base across SUND, which will serve as a strong and exciting network for computational scientists.

In the life sciences and in medical research, the introduction of inexpensive genome sequencing and advanced imaging techniques are now generating high-volume and diverse data. In some cases, these are person-sensitive. We need to create new secure models for working together with the healthcare sector and industry in order to reach important translational goals that will improve patient treatment and create new industrial leads in order to realize personalized medicine.

Use of data for public health research has largely focused on utilizing unique data resources available in Denmark (linkable public registers, cohorts, mobile use, shopping preferences, GIS etc). Getting the full benefit of the data requires methodological development on how to model unstructured data spanning over long time-periods, as well as combining such models with causal inference insight to ensure we uncover causes and not just associations. In the future, we expect the use of foreign data sources to increase. This will enable us to model health and disease trends for both non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases and key demographic indicators in a global health context.

We are establishing a hub-and-spokes model, comprising a central unit, which organizes a network of stakeholders at all SUND centers and institutes, with a shared intranet and slack communication. In this way, everybody can contribute, be involved, obtain help and advice and be part of an enlarged health data science community. We intend to leverage the existing expertise maximally. This initiative will be integrated with other DataLabs at the University of Copenhagen, KU-IT as well as other external efforts, nationally and internationally.

We are now seeking committed scientists, who would like to develop the Center together with and for colleagues and students across the Faculty.

First, we would like to recruit the Head of the Center and once the Head is in place, further two scientific positions will be filled. We envisage the following profile:

Profile for Head of Center for Health Data Science

  • Comprehensive knowledge, background and leadership experience in the field of computational biology and medical research and education
  • Strategic thinking and ability to share and develop activities for and with the community
  • Research active within one of the major areas of computational sciences
  • Strong interest and skills in bringing people together in various activities to leverage competences and quality of research and education in the relevant fields (bioinformatics, systems biology, machine learning, data management, etc.)

Place of employment
The place of employment is at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

Terms of salary and employment
The Head of the Center will refer to the Dean. The position is part time, fixed-term for three years and according to the academic seniority. Starting date is 1 January 2020 or after agreement. Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
