Tenure-Track assistant Professor of 1H-NMR based High Throughput Foodomics
Department of food science
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Food Science (FOOD), Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a position as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor within the area of 1H-NMR based High Throughput Foodomics. The Department wishes to fill the position by 1 May 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Foodomics is a research discipline that examines the entire set of substances present in our food (foodome) and their fate and impact on the human organism (metabolome). The discipline uses advanced analytical platforms such as NMR and LS/GS typically using standard operating procedures in high throughput mode. The new techniques also provide a detailed picture of food quality and can be used to detect food fraud and to find solutions for other challenges in food production. Research results from foodomics thus have a direct impact on consumers, the food industry, and society. Although foodomics is a relatively new research discipline, it is developing rapidly, and expectations are high. The hope is that foodomics will be an effective tool to develop healthy foods that are personalised to individual health challenges and prevent food-related diseases and food fraud. The research is also a key player in achieving more sustainable food production and is therefore expected to have a major impact on the circular economy of the future.

The position
You will become a part of section of Chemometrics and Analytical Technology at Department of Food Science in a successful and growing research group in which we offer you an attractive position where you over time can develop your own research focus. We expect you to have a PhD in chemical sciences with strong interest in food and biology, sustainable production and valorization of side-streams. We expect that you are highly skilled in the application of NMR spectroscopy to biological (food) matrices, including subsequent analysis of data using multivariate data analysis. We expect that you are a highly skilled hands-on laboratory researcher and that you have experience in conducting highly standardized experiments on an autonomous level. Research experience with ICP-OES and GC/MS equipment and measurements will be regarded as an additional advantage.

The candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • Documented research experience with high throughput analysis using the 1H high resolution NMR analytical platform.
  • Documented research experience in preparation of biological samples for high throughput NMR analysis. Documented research experience with high throughput NMR analysis work on biological samples, including blood, urine, tissue, feces and various food matrices. The candidate much be able to plan experiments to and able to manage reproducibility and reduce sampling errors. The candidate must be able to recommend experimental practices to the Foodomics team, and help in implementing thorough standard operating procedures for sample storage, measurement, processing and data analysis.
  • Documented experience in the ability to perform day-to-day system maintenance of the Fooomics NMR platform.
  • Documented experience with multivariate analysis of large datasets using Matlab-based tools such as e.g. the Eigenvector PLS Toolbox.
  • Documented research experience with and interest in one or several biological food systems such as fermentations, aquaculture, beverages or cereals.

In addition, it will be considered a strong advantage if the candidate has knowledge/experience in experimental work using

  • ICP-OES systems, including sample preparation and digestion. The candidate must be able to recommend experimental practices to the Foodomics team, and help in implementing thorough standard operating procedures for sample storage, measurement, processing and data analysis.
  • GC/MS systems, including sample preparation, experiment design and data evaluation and analysis

The tenure track assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within the Foodomics team. You will be a part of a very dynamic and fast-moving research environment. We are looking for a candidate that will able to conduct research with a minimum of supervision and with a high degree of autonomy, and candidates having excellence grades for master and PhD theses will be preferred. To a limited extent the position may also include other duties.

The tenure track assistant professor must have an academic standing showing internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research.
