The Digital Design Department at the IT University of Copenhagen invites candidates for an Assistant Professorship in the areas of co-design and service design. The proposed starting date is 1 February 2020 or soon thereafter.

We invite applicants who want to contribute to the IT University’s vision of creating and sharing knowledge that is profound and leads to ground-breaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity, and to contribute to the research profile of the department. Job Description
The ideal candidate should have a background in collaborative and ethnographic practices that critically investigate new possibilities of social design. This should be combined with an ability to produce knowledge through interplay between people and artifacts in specific societal contexts. These abilities could stem from a background and engagement with interaction design, co-design, service design and design anthropology. Of particular interest will be candidates with experience in using design approaches to address issues to societal questions such as welfare technology, elderly care, social mobility and marginalization.

To be considered, candidates should be able to demonstrate research and teaching qualifications in one or more of the following areas:

  • Theories and qualitative research methods related to the understanding of users, services and co-design, including a theoretical interest in design for exploration and creation of services. Areas of interest could cover digitalization of citizens, communities, organizations (including work practices) and society.
  • Co-design methods, including understanding how to engage users in design processes, approaches and qualitative methods oriented towards allowing challenged user groups to participate in service creation and design processes.

At the Digital Design Department, we have a broad understanding of digital design and interactive technologies. In the context of this position, we consider active engagement from users and other stakeholders to be the starting point of investigation and we integrate knowledge from a number of research domains such as interaction design, co-design, service design and design anthropology. The ideal candidate should have the willingness and creativity to contribute to the areas and agendas currently present at the department.

A good candidate is interested in digital design and investigations of what engages users in digital social interaction and is continuously motivated to explore and map emerging trends in the interplay between people, technologies and social contexts.

Applicants should provide a research plan explaining the research they wish to pursue in the position as Assistant Professor. Applicants should also be able to carry out research-based teaching and supervision in a variety of subjects related to co-design and service design in the areas mentioned above at both bachelor and master level.

The ideal candidate should document:

  • Publications of research at a high international level in well-respected peer-reviewed venues related to the research areas in the call
  • Competences in developing and conducting teaching that is well received by students
  • A record of contributing to the goals of institutions in which he/she has worked, for instance participation in committees or boards.

In addition, candidates for the position should be able to:

  • Participate in and co-develop applications for external research funding
  • Read/speak a Scandinavian language (or have the willingness to learn Danish)

General information
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time academics. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialisation of IT.

The assistant professorship is a temporary position for up to 4 years with the possibility of extension. The position requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

  • Documentation of academic degrees (copy of degree certificates etc.)
  • Copies of 3-5 publications relevant to the position.
  • A numbered list of publications. The enclosed publications should be marked with an asterisk (*)
  • Documentation of pedagogical experience and teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position

The applicant will be assessed according to the Appointment Order from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of 13 March 2012.

The IT University may use shortlisting in connection to the recruitment process. In case of shortlisting, the Chair of the hiring committee selects applicants for assessment in consultation with the hiring committee after the application deadline. All applicants are notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The shortlisting of candidates for assessment is based on the criteria in the job posting.
