At The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one ore more PhD stipends in Wind Turbine Control are available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design. The stipends are open for appointment from June 1st, 2020, or soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
The PhD project will be part of the IFD (Innovation Fund Denmark) Grand Solutions project "Predicting Wind Turbine Stability in General Inflow PRESTIGE" starting April 1, 2020, and runs for 3 years. The project is a cooperation between the partners Technical University of Denmark, Aalborg University, VESTAS Wind Power Systems A/S, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy A/S and LM Wind Power A/S.

Modern wind turbines can experience destructive fluid-induced vibrations. Cost reduction drives the development towards increasing blade length and flexibility, increasing the risk for such vibrations. The PRESTIGE project will ensure that future turbines do not encounter instabilities. These potential instability phenomenons are a result of dynamics combining the mechanical wind turbine structure, in particular the blades, and the aerodynamics. This is known under the name Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV).

In summary, the project aims at describing, modelling, simulation and controlling VIV. Aalborg University contributes with the control engineering part of the project. This will include modelling suited for control, detection of VIV, control design to attenuate or avoid VIV and it will potentially cover both stand still, idling and normal operation for the wind turbine. The methods used in the project can include system identification, fault detection, Kalman/particle filtering, machine learning, supervisory control MPC control and more. The main responsibility of the PhD student will be to deliver the AAU part of the project under the supervisor’s guidance. The PhD student will work in close cooperation with the other partners.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
