Postdoc Position in Functional Microbe Technology Group

Aarhus Universitet (AU)

A 1-year full-time postdoc position (In case further external funding is secured within the academic area the candidate is assessed obviously qualified for, an extension is possible for up to a total maximum of 4 years of employment as a postdoc) at the Functional Microbe Technology Group at the Biological and Chemical Engineering Section at Aarhus University. The position is financed by Aarhus Universitets Forskningsfond.

The position is available from September 1st 2020 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description/research project/research area
The group of Functional Microbe Technology investigates traits of single microbes, strain consortia, and complex microbial communities that are of relevance both in food products and in the intestinal tract of humans and animals. Current projects investigate bacterially produced metabolites, that can (chemically) react with food components, the host or with dietary derived compounds modifying their properties, trophic – nutrition related - interactions in different ecosystems, mechanisms of microbial functions, and how these microbial activities can be exploited and manipulated.

Our research program employs a combination of advanced molecular tools, aerobic and anaerobic cultivation, biotechnological processes such as food, batch and continuous fermentation systems and preservation, and various analytical chromatography techniques.
Projects are run with local and international partners. The candidates are expected to collaborate with PhD students and co-supervise bachelor and master students.

Your profile
Applicants should hold an outstanding PhD in food or gut microbiology or biotechnology, or in a related field.

Candidates with experience in isolation and cultivation of facultative and strict anaerobic food and gut microbes, molecular techniques (DNA isolation, PCR, qPCR), protein expression and cloning, and fermented food will be preferred. Prior experience with chromatographic analyses, 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomics and data analysis, will be considered positive.

Applicants should be self-driven and capable of planning and conducting own research while willing to collaborate closely in an international team. Good communication skills in written and spoken English language are essential, and candidates should have a good publication record with clear contributions as first author.

The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in ques-tion before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
