About us
The metabolomics research group at the Section for Clinical Mass Spectrometry, Danish Center for Newborn Screening is looking for a dedicated data scientist with a strong background in big omics data analysis.

Our group consists of three academics and one laboratory technician and specializes in research and development of population size mass spectrometry-based metabolomics approaches, for predictive, personalized and preventive diagnostics.

A large majority of our samples are neonatal dried blood spots, which we retrieve from the Danish National Biobank, hosting samples from around half of the population in Denmark. In combination with demographic and health-related data from Danish registries, these samples provide a unique resource for us to study early metabolic predictors of disease.

Our group is located within the Danish Center for Newborn Screening, comprising about 50 employees and a number of associate guest researchers, PhDs and specialists. The department has an active research environment and also performs the nationwide newborn screening for inborn errors of metabolism.

The position
Our group aims at developing analytical and computational solutions for population size metabolomics studies. We believe that artificial intelligence will be key in driving solutions towards feature detection, chemical structural elucidation as well as recognition of metabolic fingerprints related to disease. Therefore, we are looking for a dedicated researcher that can support our research with expertise in machine learning, big omics data science or a related field.

In this context, your responsibilities will be to drive advanced data analysis workflows for our metabolomics research projects, ranging from feature detection to chemical structural elucidation and biological interpretation of the data. Research questions could for example include: Can we predict disease outcomes from metabolic fingerprints in neonatal dried blood spots? How can we efficiently extract metabolic features in thousands to millions of samples? How can we increase and automate chemical structural annotation and subsequent biological interpretation from mass spectral fragmentation spectra?

The daily activities of the group are exclusively research-based, and include academic tasks such as study design, data analysis, biological interpretation of results, writing up of publications and grants. Through our close proximity and collaboration with the routine neonatal screening program, our findings can have a direct societal impact.

Your education, experience and personal qualifications
You have an academic background with a PhD in Bioinformatics, Chemoinformatics, Machine learning, Big Omics Data Science or a related field.

In addition to this, we expect you to have:

  • Excellent scientific writing skills and good publication track record
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g. R, Python)
  • A strong drive to perform research projects independently and good collaborative skills.

Previous experience within computational mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, or epidemiology is a strong advantage.

Terms of employment
The employment is covered by the terms of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Association (gældende overenskomst mellem Finansministeriet og Akademikernes Centralorganisation).

The position is a full time position limited to 3 years with possibility for extension.
