Statens Serum Institut is looking for an Analytical Chemist for Metabolomics Method Development using Mass Spectrometry

Statens Serum Institut

About the department of Congenital Disorders
We are looking for a dedicated analytical chemist with a strong background in metabolomics method development using mass spectrometry to join our research group at the Section for Clinical Mass Spectrometry.

Our group consists of 3 academics and 1 laboratory technician and specializes in research and development of population size mass spectrometry-based metabolomics approaches, for predictive, personalized and preventive diagnostics. A large majority of our samples are neonatal dried blood spots, which we retrieve from the Danish National Biobank, hosting samples from around half of the population in Denmark. In combination with demographic and health-related data from Danish registries, these samples provide a unique resource for us to study early metabolic predictors of disease.

Our group is located within the Danish Center for Neonatal Screening, comprising about 50 employees and a number of associate guest researchers, PhDs and specialists. The department has an active research environment and performs the nationwide newborn screening for inborn errors of metabolism.

About the position
Our group aims at developing analytical and computational solutions for population size metabolomics studies.

Your responsibilities will be to lead the development and improvement of LC-MS/MS-based methods for our metabolomics research projects. Currently, our laboratory is equipped with two LC-QTOF-MS/MS systems (Bruker timsTOF Pro and Bruker Impact II). In collaboration with a dedicated technician and three dedicated academic researchers, your main tasks will include the development of state-of-the-art LC-MS/MS metabolomics protocols, laboratory protocols, daily technical troubleshooting in the laboratory, as well as conducting literature search for state-of-the-art methods for various biological matrices, quality assurance (i.e. method validation, procedure writing, quality control, etc.). Your objectives will be to develop high quality and high throughput methods, apply these to our current research projects and publish the findings in peer-reviewed journals.

The daily activities of the group are exclusively research-based, and include academic tasks such as study design, data analysis, biological interpretation of results and writing up of publications and grants. Through our close proximity and collaboration with the routine neonatal screening program, our findings can have a very direct societal impact.

We work in close collaboration with many national and international research groups, universities and centers of excellence at the interphase of personalized medicine, metabolomics, microbiome and register-based research and epidemiology.

Your education, experience and personal qualifications
We expect you to have a PhD or at least a few years of professional experience involving hands-on LC-MS/MS. Further we expect you to have:

  • a strong technical background and interest in high resolution accurate mass spectrometry (HRAM) type instruments
  • experience in troubleshooting analytical methods
  • experience in analytical method development
  • knowledge and interest in quality assurance
  • experience with or interest for automation of extraction methods (e.g. programming of pipetting robots)
  • a team-oriented personality. You enjoy working closely with others and have good collaborative skills and commitment
  • proficient in spoken and written English.

It is a strong advantage if you have experience:

  • within metabolomics or related fields (e.g. proteomics)
  • with handling various biological matrices (dried blood spots, plasma, urine, cerebrospinal fluid etc.)
  • or interest to learn and perform basic metabolomics preprocessing and analysis
  • with guidance and supervision of laboratory technicians.

We offer
A job in a highly committed and ambitious research environment, with ample opportunity to influence the research projects and a highly varied working day with flexible working hours. Our team is international, and our working language is English.

Terms of employment
Salary and appointment terms will be based on the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC) (overenskomst for akademikere i staten)

The position is a full-time position limited to 3 years with possibility for extension.
