Your team You will be part of the Directorate General Market Infrastructures and Payments, more precisely the Directorate Digital Euro, which started the digital euro preparation phase in November 2023. During this phase the focus will be on further preparing for the development of a digital euro, building on the findings from our investigation phase.

We are looking to fill expert positions in the End-to-End Product and Delivery Division. The Division is responsible for designing digital euro end-to-end flows, defining user requirements and the technical architecture of the platform, and preparing for potential testing and roll-out.

Alongside other experts, you will be a member of the Functional Product Design team carrying out the preparatory work involved in designing digital euro end-to-end flows and defining user requirements. The team also provides support in the definition of implementation specifications for intermediaries participating in the digital euro scheme.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role As a member of the Functional Product Design team, you will:

  • contribute to detailing the functional and non-functional requirements that determine the product design of the digital euro;
  • contribute, in collaboration with the Rulebook Development Group, to the development of efficient end-to-end digital euro processes, business rules, standards and implementation specifications governing the interaction between intermediaries and service providers in the digital euro payment solution;
  • engage with experts from national central banks, market participants and digital euro governance groups.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to help shape the future of central bank money for all citizens and firms in the euro area and, in so doing, support the digitalisation of the euro area economy. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills Essential:

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in business administration, economics, project management, finance, STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics), computer science or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of three years’ professional experience (other than as a trainee or intern) in defining functional requirements and/or designing end-to-end processes in the field of payments solutions and/or infrastructures;
  • functional knowledge of at least one among: settlement engines, privacy enhancing techniques, fraud prevention or payments routing;
  • excellent analytical and drafting skills;
  • experience in presenting complex functional and/or technical topics in a clear and concise manner to internal and external audiences;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • a track record in delivering high-quality results within tight time frames, managing multiple assignments simultaneously and prioritising tasks;
  • experience in defining business rules and implementation specifications in the area of retail payments.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Further information The contract offered will be fixed term until 31 January 2026 – in line with the current timeline for the preparation phase.

Temporary appointments may be extended or made permanent subject to organisational needs and budgetary constraints. This may result in a staff member with a non-convertible fixed-term contract being offered a convertible contract in accordance with the ECB Conditions of Employment.
