We have an available position as PhD student at the Research Unit of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Center (Børne- og Ungdomspsykiatrisk Center, BUC). The specific content area of the PhD is not defined; this is an open call. The research area may methodologically be investigated in register studies, clinical intervention studies, translational studies, or preventive studies. The topic for the PhD may be within the broad spectrum of areas relevant to child- and adolescent mental health. However, applicants with an interest in research issues related to the specific research areas listed below are particularly encouraged:

  • Investigation, treatment, rehabilitation and cross-sectoral coordination for children and young people with moderate to severe and complex functional (psychosomatic) disorders. (Professor Katrine Pagsberg)
  • Children (0-5 years) in need of psychopharmacological treatment. (Professor Søren Dalsgaard)
  • Adolescent forensic psychiatry – patients (14-17 years) referred for psychiatric forensic evaluation or sentenced to placement or psychiatric treatment. (Professor James Blair)
  • Safety and the use of coercive measures (Professor Katrine Pagsberg)
  • Youth with substance use disorders. (Professor James Blair og Professor Søren Dalsgaard)

In your application, please include a description (maximum length 1 page) of what topic you wish your PhD research to be about.

The application proposal will be competitive and rely on an appropriate match with at least one of the four Professors within the BUC: Robert James Blair, Anne Amalie Elgaard Thorup, Anne Katrine Pagsberg, Søren Dalsgaard.

The position
We offer a 3-year PhD position in an inspiring research environment with colleagues from different educational backgrounds. You will be part of BUC, which aims to improve the mental health care of children and adolescents in Denmark.

During a PhD at the BUC, you will handle the research-related tasks. These could include:

  • Development of a study protocol
  • Meetings with participating clinics, schools, children, adolescents, and parents
  • Informing and recruiting trial participants
  • Obtaining consent from the young people and their parents
  • Administrative procedures associated with the research
  • Data collection, processing, and analysis
  • Production of scientific articles

The specific details would be determined following the PhD design and in collaboration with the supervising Professor.

As a starting point, the workplace will be in the Research Unit at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Center located at Gentofte Hospital, but clinic, school and/or parent meetings might be held throughout the Capital Region.

The 3-year appointment is expected to result in the preparation of a PhD thesis, research articles for Danish and international journals as well as participation in national and international conferences.

Your qualifications
We imagine that you have a master's degree in neuroscience or social or health sciences (e.g. within medicine, nursing, psychology, public health science, health promotion, pedagogy, etc.). You have some experience with study design and implementation and can handle research-related tasks. It is an advantage if you have experience with or interest in mental health and young people.

In addition, we would appreciate if you:

  • Have experience with recruitment and data collection, including experience with research databases, e.g. REDCap
  • Have statistical skills, including insight into effect measurements
  • Are committed, flexible and structured
  • Can work independently and follow tasks
  • Have good communication skills and experience with interdisciplinary and/or cross-sector collaboration
  • Have good skills for collaboration
  • Have IT skills

Terms of employment
The position is for 37 hours per week and we want you to start per 1st November 2024 or as soon as possible.

You are employed in accordance with the collective agreement for academics employed in Regions.

About the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Center
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Center (BUC) is part of the Capital Region of Psychiatry. The center investigates and treats children and young people with all kinds of child and youth psychiatric disorders. The center has two clinical departments: the Outpatient Department and the 24-hour Department distributed over several registers in the Region.

In addition, the center has several support functions and a research unit. In total, we are approx. 900 employees who are part of a close interdisciplinary collaboration on the approx. 13,000 young people aged 0-17 who are seen in the center annually.
