Subsea Flexible Pipe Design Engineer

National Oilwell Varco Denmark I/S

Subsea Flexible Pipe Design Engineer

Overview
Join Our Team and Shape the Future of Offshore Engineering!
Are you passionate about offshore engineering and eager to tackle complex challenges in a dynamic environment? Do you have a knack for structural analysis and a keen eye for detail? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you! NOV Subsea Production Systems, based in Brøndby, Copenhagen, Denmark, is seeking a talented engineer for performing structural analysis of subsea flexible pipe systems to join our innovative team and contribute to groundbreaking projects in the energy sector.

In NOV SPS, part of the Fortune 500 company NOV, we power the industries that power the world. Our core business is engineering, manufacturing, and delivering high-quality flexible pipe systems for our clients around the world.

NOV SPS consists of about 1500 colleagues based in Denmark, Brazil, Norway, the UK, and US, including flexible pipe production plants in Kalundborg, Denmark and Açu, Brazil.

You’ll be joining a business unit with approximately 40 different nationalities, with customers based all around the world.

Your New Role
Joining one of our two local teams in the Pipe System Design department, each consisting of around 15 Danish and international engineers, you will play a crucial role in designing our core product, the flexible pipe cross-section, ensuring manufacturability, material compatibility and the pipes’ structural integrity, analyzing and accounting for dozens of failure modes, and performing complex calculations with respect to flexible pipe properties and capacities. Since everything we do relates to the pipe cross section, as a pipe design engineer you will have a central role in our projects, and you will have close interfaces with most of our departments, including our other engineering disciplines focused on designing the riser system and specific components like the end-fittings, and ancillary components such as bend stiffeners and buoyancy modules, in order to design technically feasible and cost-effective flexible pipe solutions.

You will be part of our global and international Engineering department, based in Brøndby, Copenhagen, Denmark, where we work on several major flexible pipe projects at a time in a multi-disciplinary environment. You will take part in a range of tasks in the projects, where you can leverage your skills as an engineer to succeed.

You will receive comprehensive support and training to master the specifics of the role, and we will assign a buddy/mentor to get you started. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive local (cross-sectional) analysis of flexible pipes under various extreme operating conditions using in-house analysis- and FEA-based software and tools.
  • Performing structural analysis to assess the flexible pipe failure modes, technical feasibility and cost effectiveness.
  • Analyzing the mechanical behavior of flexible pipes, considering factors like bending, axial tension, compression, and torsion.
  • Evaluating extreme environmental conditions like 100-year events, operational fatigue life conditions, as well as installation scenarios to ensure a safe deployment and maintenance-free operation of the pipes for 20+ years.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineering disciplines, our sales department, project management, supply chain, planning, operations, manufacturing, etc., to ensure efficient and successful project execution.
  • Collaborating and communicating with our customers, independent verification parties, installation contractors, and other external stakeholders.
  • Preparing detailed technical reports and documentation to deliver analysis results and recommendations for handling, installation and operation.
  • Provide technical support to factories concerning manufacturing deviations and non-conformity assessments on projects.
  • Ensuring compliance with industry standards (API Spec 17J and RP 17B), regulations, and safety requirements.

About You
From the moment you start your career in NOV, we will support your personal and professional development. While we welcome both newly graduated as well as experienced engineers to apply, we have identified some skills and competencies that we believe will set you up for success in your new role:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials, or a related field.
  • Experience in structural analysis and project engineering.
  • Proficiency in finite element analysis and programming skills with Python and/or VBA.
  • Strong understanding of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, fatigue analysis, thermodynamics, and nonlinear behavior of materials.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex technical information clearly.
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English on a professional level.

Why Join Us?
Flexible pipes are one of the most complex products in the offshore industries, and every pipe we deliver is custom engineered for the client’s specific needs and requirements, and for the specific environmental conditions whether it’s offshore Brazil, Australia, Africa, or in the North Sea. The job will provide a lifelong learning opportunity full of challenging, unique projects that are crucial to the world’s energy supply.

In NOV Subsea Production Systems, we are at the forefront of offshore engineering, delivering cutting-edge solutions that power the industries that power the world. Our team of experts is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of technology and ensuring the safety and reliability of offshore structures.

NOV is a large corporation with a multitude of career opportunities, offering a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. We are committed to ensuring a good work-life balance including a standard 37-hour work week, flexibility to work partly from home, and providing overtime payment. Business travel is to a limited extent part of the job and may happen in occasional opportunities to visit customers around the globe as well as other NOV sites/offices. More frequently, you will have to visit our factory in Kalundborg, where you can see your designs come to life, provide your engineering expertise and support, and experience the pipes coiled up on reels the size of a two-story house being picked up by our customers and sailed to their destination.
