PhD scholarship in Turbulence for large floating wind turbines - DTU Wind

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

We search for a PhD student for “Turbulence for large floating wind turbines”. As turbines are getting higher, less is known about the gusts and turbulence hitting the turbines. Focus will be on floating wind turbine and the position is financed by Equinor.
If you want a scientific career in renewable energies, DTU provides a position where you will create new scientific understanding in the interface between floating offshore wind turbines and atmospheric processes. You will work with the top scientist in the field together with best wind energy companies to understand the interaction of the atmosphere and these giant floating structures.

Responsibilities and qualifications
In a few years, offshore wind turbines may reach up to 400 meters into the atmosphere. As we move up further up in the atmosphere the current model predictions become less accurate, especially for large-scale wind speed fluctuations. We need you to improve so-called turbulence spectral models, key for the development of modern wind turbines. Their low computational cost, ease of implementation and accuracy has made them the standard tool when it comes to wind turbine aerodynamic and structural response simulations. Your effort should make us able to describe atmospheric turbulent flow at larger heights allowing for more realistic and faster wind turbine load simulations.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Formulate an extended/new spectral model to account for high altitudes effects on turbulence (up to 400 m.a.s.l.).
  • Verify and validate the new model with various measurements and simulation data.
  • Define strategies for a generalization of the model parameters
  • Study the effect of the improved physics in the new model on offshore wind turbine/wind farm response and validate against multi-scale high resolution simulations.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.

Application procedure
Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 15 December 2024 (23:59 Danish time).

Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale

You may apply prior to obtaining your master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.
