Postdoc in Multimodal Sensor Fusion for Infrastructure Mapping - DTU Electro

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Would you like to contribute to the sustainable and human-centered digitalization of the transport industry? Then join us in building the future AI systems that can improve the safety of and reliability of transport operations on the road and at sea.
Would you like to contribute to the sustainable and human-centered digitalization of the transport industry?

Are you energized by the opportunity to design future AI systems to improve the safety and reliability of transport operations on the road and at sea?

Would you like to establish yourself as a key scientist in autonomous systems and be part of an internationally leading research group in the space?

Then look no further because the opportunity to fulfill your professional ambitions stands right in front of you.

Building on its research legacy on resilient autonomous systems, DTU Electro will break new ground on developing cutting edge solutions for the real-time mapping of civilian infrastructure (e.g., harbours and roads) through the robust fusion of several sensing modalities hosted onboard surface vessels or cars to enable the safe operations at sea and on the road. As postdoc in Multimodal Sensor Fusion for Infrastructure Mapping, you will have a key role in several innovation projects, you will collaborate with leading industry partners in Denmark and across Europe, and you will contribute to consolidate DTU Electro’s international leadership on autonomous systems.

The research of this project has civilian objectives. However, equipment restricted by export licenses and ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) is being used. Applicants that are citizens of Denmark, Norway and other NATO countries, Australia, Austria, Finland, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine are eligible. Other applicants should provide evidence of eligibility to use such equipment for their application to be considered.

Your overall focus will be to strengthen DTU Electro expertise in multimodal sensor fusion and mapping through distributed sensor networks, with emphasis on creating real-time 2D/3D representations of civilian infrastructures, by developing novel methods and tools at the intersection of sensor fusion, machine learning, perception, and estimation theory. Focus should be on calibration agnostic methods to overcome the challenges connected with the fusion of data provided by the distributed network of sensors. You will play a pivotal role in the collaboration with industry partners of the innovation projects where the position is anchored. You will work closely with other members of the research team focusing on resilient autonomous systems.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Perform internationally relevant research in multimodal sensor fusion and mapping
  • Perform data collection campaigns and ensure the proper data management
  • Develop and test algorithms for multimodal metric-semantic SLAM to enable remote navigation of surface vessels into harbours
  • Develop and test algorithms for multimodal estimation and mapping of road infrastructure condition to enable the dynamic assessment of travel conditions for connected and automated vehicles
  • Coordinate the preparation of scientific publications towards ISI journals and highly ranked international conferences
  • Share findings of your research with qualified professional audiences
  • Supervise BSc and MSc projects within areas relevant to the project

You should meet the following qualifications:

  • You have a documented track record in two or more of the listed subjects: machine learning for multimodal perception, sensor fusion, simultaneous localization and mapping, vision-based perception, state estimation for dynamical systems
  • You have documented experience in working with one or more of the listed sensor technologies: camera (in one or more spectral ranges), LIDAR, and RADAR (in one or more wavelengths), vibration sensors.
  • You have a documented track record of software development and testing for autonomous systems in resource-constrained hardware environments
  • You have a solid expertise in software development in ROS/ROS2 using one or more of the programming languages Python, C++, C#
  • You have experience in preparing and performing experimental campaigns, preferably in the marine environment
  • You are a committed team-oriented person, who can proactively initiate research actions and enthusiastically engage with internal and external stakeholder

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
