CO2 converstion to solids: Transforming waste materials to valuable products

We are developing a fast, cheap, environmentally friendly way to mineralise CO2, to make stable, useful products. We invite enthusiastic candidates to join our team.

As a result of recently funded projects, our research group is looking to fill a position for a reactor design engineer (chemical, process or mechanical engineer or similar).

Our goal is to develop novel methods to mineralise CO2, converting it o products that are stable long term. Even with the very best alternative energy sources, current air and ocean CO2 levels will need 1,000 to 10,000 years to return to preindustrial levels. We will help to overcome these limitations through the development of new processes and products.

We are running several projects in parallel, ranging from fundamental investigations of mineral-water-gas properties, through developing predictive models and new experimental methods and instrumentation, to design creative and cost-effective CO2 trapping processes for installation in a factory chimney. We aim to build a factory pilot CO2 removal system, with eventual commercialisation. The need is urgent, the task is challenging, and a multidisciplinary approach is essential - so our group consists of highly motivated scientists and engineers, including chemists, physicists, nanoscientists, materials scientists, mineralogists, geoscientists and others at all academic levels, some with extensive experience in industry.

The job
Your overall responsibility is to work with the reactor design team. Your main tasks are to:

  • help build and test small- and large-scale prototypes,
  • contribute to research and development in the group, especially where it leads to derivation or optimisation of parameters for the reactors,
  • communicate and build a network with the industry partners.

We are looking for a dependable, curious, enthusiastic colleague who has an interest in nature, enjoys solving problems and working together. Experience is a bonus. We expect you to have:

  • a solid background in reactor design or process engineering
  • a PhD or an MSc with experience
  • technical expertise and joy in building and fixing things
  • communication and personal interaction skills
  • fluency in Danish and English

We are looking for a team player who can also work independently, who is motivated to help make, and be part of, a dynamic research environment and who has a positive, supportive and creative outlook.

We offer
DTU is among the leading technical universities of Europe and the top in the Nordic countries. Our CO2 projects will unite scientists and engineers from several DTU departments as well as national and international researchers from a number of fields. We work in close cooperation with industry. The atmosphere in the group is friendly and supportive, allowing us to produce groundbreaking results, essential for society and industry. Our mission is to derive new, fundamental understanding and apply it to solve society’s problems.

Salary and appointment terms
Appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.

The position is a full-time position. Starting date is 1 February 2025 (or according to mutual agreement). The period of employment is 2 years.

The workplace is the DTU Lyngby Campus.

To apply
Please submit your online application no later than 9 December 2024 (23:59 Danish time). Open the “Apply now” link, fill out the form and attach:

  • a cover letter (1 to 1.5 pages) explaining how you are perfect for the position, using your background as examples;
  • your CV, including employment history with dates, career highlights and other relevant information about you as a person;
  • the name, email and phone number for 3 personal references (do not include letters of reference).

If you would like additional information about the position, please contact Professor Susan Stipp, [email protected].

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.
