Postdoc: Innovate with Microstructural Engineering in Additive Manufacturing of Stainless Steel 316L and 17-4 PH! - DTU Construct

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Exciting Postdoc Opportunity in Microstructural Engineering for Additive Manufacturing! Join the MicroAM Villum Investigator project to enhance toughness and fatigue resistance in AM steel 316L and 17-4 PH through innovative in-situ and post-AM microstructural engineering.
Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing? The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at DTU invites you to join our team as a postdoc for 2.5 years within the Villum Investigator project, ‘Microstructural Engineering of Additive Manufactured Metals—MicroAM’.

This role is perfect for you if you're eager to lead innovative research, applying cutting-edge tools like a laboratory-based X-ray microscope to map local residual stresses. You'll gain hands-on experience in experimental work focused on optimizing the microstructure of AM steels 316L and 17-4 PH to enhance toughness and fatigue resistance. Working in a collaborative environment, you'll engage with experts using advanced AM simulations to guide your research.

If you're ready to make a significant impact in the field of additive manufacturing and microstructural engineering, we encourage you to apply and become a key player in our groundbreaking project!

Responsibilities and qualifications
For 316L, our microstructural engineering will focus on in-situ optimization of the local distribution of grain sizes, crystallographic orientations, and stresses by the novel possibility of varying the laser beam shape and spot size while printing. For AM 17-4 PH, we will use heat treatments (in-situ as well as ex-situ) to control the aging process, with the aim of developing a tailored microstructure with layered precipitation.

Your primary tasks will be:

  • Print 316L and 17-4 PH stainless steel samples with optimized parameters.
  • Optimize the aging treatment of AM 17-4 PH stainless steel.
  • Perform non-destructive 3D and 4D characterizations of the microstructural evolution during straining and annealing.
  • Conduct tensile and fatigue tests.
  • Link printing parameters, microstructural characteristics, and resulting mechanical properties.

You will work in close collaboration with a group of senior scientists, technicians, as well as Post Docs and PhDs. The work will also involve collaboration with selected external partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong background in metal additive manufacturing, especially laser powder bed fusion.
  • Expertise in microstructural characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, EBSD, and TEM.
  • Experience in mechanical testing, including tensile and fatigue tests.
  • Proficiency in advanced data science, including machine learning.
  • Knowledge of physical metallurgy, particularly in steels.
  • Excellent English communication skills.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
