Your role and responsibilities
ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses. Novel industrial paradigms, such as Industry 4.0, are changing the way we understand production systems. This poses challenges in the automation infrastructure, which must be adapted to support more flexible production lines with customization and change in their core. Exploring new architectures, designs, and components, focusing on their limitations and strengths is a key step towards the reliable, flexible and real-time automation systems of the future. Details: • Start in January/February 2025 for a duration of 5 months. • 30 ECTS per student. • 1-2 students. • On site ABB Corporate Research in Västerås – ABB may cover the accommodation. Research topics: • What are the capabilities and limitations of the novel automation components? • How can we integrate the control applications with the network infrastructure in an efficient and reliable manner? • Which methods or mechanisms can we use to improve the existing infrastructure? Goals: • Build a distributed control system using state-of-the-art ABB components. • Support the evaluation of the network capabilities of novel ABB control devices. Approach: • Set up a distributed control system use case utilizing novel ABB devices. • Evaluate the network capabilities of such components and possibly extend them. • Propose methods for the integration of the control application and the network infrastructure.
Qualifications for the role
- Drive and interest to work with real-world use cases.
- Background in computer science, embedded systems or similar.
- Basic knowledge of distributed control systems.
- Knowledge about industrial networks.
- Good soft skills and collaborative spirit.
