The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a collaborative organization comprising 13 European member countries, based in Lund, Sweden, with the goal of designing, constructing, and operating the world’s most powerful neutron source.
ESS is currently looking for a mechanical technician to work within the Materials Science and Physics Support (MSPS) group which manages the development and maintenance of complex systems that expose samples to extreme conditions like low temperature, high pressure, high temperature, magnetic fields, and mechanical deformation.
About the role:
Join our dynamic MSPS Group and support both the MSPS and neutron instrument teams. Your responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating across teams: Assist colleagues within MSPS and neutron instrument staff with a variety of machining tasks.
- Supporting systems: Contribute to the testing, configuration, maintenance, and repair of sample environment systems, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
- On-site equipment installation: Work alongside the instrument team to install equipment on neutron instruments during operational phases.
- Workshop management: Maintain tools and keep the workshop organized and functional.
- Innovative development: Play an active role in developing new and improved sample environment systems.
- On-call responsibilities: Be prepared for occasional night and weekend on-call duties during operation times.
About You:
We are looking for someone with the following background:
- Relevant technical experience: A background in mechanical or instrumentation technology, with hands-on machining skills.
- Eager to learn: A strong desire to expand your skills in new areas, such as TIG welding, brazing, and industrial drawing.
- Team-oriented: A flexible, focused approach with the ability to collaborate effectively and deliver results.
- Fluent in technical English: Comfortable working in English, both in documentation and communication.
- Willingness to grow: A proactive attitude and eagerness to learn and develop your expertise.
It would be great if, in addition, you have any of the following experience or skills:
- Experience in MSPS technical fields: Prior hands-on experience in cryogenics, high temperature, magnetic fields, high pressure, mechanical processing, or vacuum technology.
- Support experience in research labs: Experience helping users in large-scale facilities or research labs.
- Scientific equipment experience: Previous experience in developing, modifying, or repairing complex scientific equipment.
Who We’re Looking For:
We value personality and attitude as much as technical skills. We’re looking for a team player who thrives in a collaborative and diverse environment. Additionally, as part of your growth, you’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at leading scientific facilities worldwide. Be prepared for travel opportunities ranging from 1 week to 1 month, outside of Sweden, within the first two years of your contract.
