The European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

About the role
We are now looking to appoint a Software Engineer to the Digital Solutions Group in our IT Division. In this role you will find many opportunities to work with an experienced group of IT professionals and be part of new and exciting projects.
As a Software Engineer, your role is in maintaining, configuring, and supporting key applications, including Jira, Confluence, Indico, and Drupal-based systems. You will ensure these platforms operate efficiently, meet user needs, and integrate with our software ecosystem. As Digital Solutions is becoming increasingly present in more areas there are always changes to what systems we support currently.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Administration: Configure, manage, and maintain Jira, Confluence, Indico, and Drupal-based systems.
- User Support: Provide technical support and training to end-users, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions.
- Performance Optimisation: Monitor application performance, ensuring high availability and responsiveness.
- Upgrades and Maintenance: Manage system updates, patches, and migrations with minimal disruption.
- Integration Management: Ensure seamless integration of applications with other systems and tools.
- Collaboration: Work closely with developers, system architects, and stakeholders to deliver tailored solutions.
- Documentation: Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation for configurations, processes, and user guides.
About you
To be successful in this role, we believe that you have a M.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering or similar. You have approximately ten years’ experience as an application engineer, and a minimum of five years’ experience from the tasks listed above.
To thrive in this role we believe that you enjoy communicating and collaborating with people of various backgrounds and areas of expertise. You enjoy delivering results and meeting expectations from the organization. Working in a structured and organised way is also vital in this role.
Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, as it is the working language at ESS.
