At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience a position as Assistant Professor in Environmental Biotechnology is open for appointment from 1 April 2025 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 3 years. The workplace is Aalborg.
Jobbeskrivelse
The Assistant Professor will be part of our team working with microbial processes in relation to wastewater treatment, resource recovery and bioenergy production. The candidate will be involved in collaboration with wastewater treatment plants through the MiDAS project and on the recovery of biopolymers from activated sludge through the ReTHInK project(see department website), but is expected to establish own research profile, preferably related to microbial community assembly and dynamics. We search for a person with expertise in DNA-based analyses of microbial communities, microbial interactions, modelling of microbial dynamics. The ideal candidate will have a strong interdisciplinary background integrating microbial ecology with process engineering and with a proven record in attracting external funding.
The position will be anchored in Center for Microbial Communities with approx. 50 scientists at various career levels, working with structure and function of microbial communities, primarily related to environmental microbiology and biotechnology. The Center has state of the art equipment for DNA analyses and advanced microscopy.
This position offers an excellent opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment, collaborating with experts in microbial ecology, bioinformatics, and wastewater engineering.
Teaching will primarily be in Environmental Biotechnology, but also in other study programmes at the University.
Special requirements:
- A master's degree in Environmental Engineering, Biotechnology or similar
- Excellent oral and written English language skills are a requirement.
- The applicant must be interested in working in an interdisciplinary research environment.
- Extensive expertise and experience with molecular methods, microbial communities, wastewater treatment, resource recovery and bioenergy production.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position(appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

Assessment
The assessment of candidates for the position will be carried out by qualified experts.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that after the application deadline, the head of the department, with the assistance of the hiring committee, will select the applicants to be assessed. All applicants will be informed whether they have been shortlisted for assessment or not.
Assessed applicants may be invited to a job interview.
When the hiring process is completed, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.

Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state(AC collective agreement)(only in Danish) and circular concerning protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities(only in Danish).
