PhD scholarship in Storms Over Offshore Wind Farms - DTU Wind

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

We are looking for a PhD student for “Storms Over Offshore Wind Farms: understanding and modelling the harsh conditions of offshore wind farms”. Focus is on numerical and turbulence modeling of winds and waves in storm conditions in the presence of wind farms. The position is financed by Equinor ASA.
Are you establishing your career as a scientist in renewable energies, and looking for an excellent foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions? It is right here in front of you. At DTU Wind and Energy Systems Department, you will have the opportunity to break new ground at the absolute forefront of what is possible. We have a PhD position which might be for you, who wishes to dive into the mighty storms that move over and interact with offshore wind farms.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading scientists from academia and wind energy industry, and work on the most advanced theories, models, using first-hand cases and data from the wind energy industry, to lift our understanding of wind and wave characteristics during storms in the presence of wind farms, and the impact which the storm and the farms impose on each other.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Storms, as one of the most influential Extreme Event types, constitute a variety of challenges to offshore wind farm design, operation & maintenance, grid balancing and energy systems. These impacts become more and more important as offshore wind farm clusters are growing bigger and bigger. Different types of storms in different regions have different spatial and temporal structures in wind energy related parameters: e.g. wind, precipitation and waves. Will such structures be altered by the presence of wind farms? By being able to correctly identify, calculate and describe storm characteristics for specific applications we can significantly reduce risks, uncertainties and costs.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Explore and improve DTU’s atmosphere-wave-wake coupled modeling system for different types of storms over wind farms: looking deeply at the interaction mechanisms between storms and wind farms
  • Advance the capabilities of storm identification and modeling in collaboration with DestinE’s Extremes Digital Twin
  • Model turbulence for large wind turbines and wind farm clusters during different storm conditions
  • Process data from measurements and modeling
  • Connect your findings to energy production, site suitability, and potentially to turbine performance and energy systems impacts

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.

Application procedure
Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 24 April 2025 (23:59 Danish time).

Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale

You may apply prior to obtaining your master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.

Our research spans the full spectrum of wind and energy systems. From investigating nanoscale structures to macro-scale atmospheric flow; from designing the turbines of tomorrow to the digital energy solutions of the future; from developing electric power systems to exploring more democratic processes for project planning.

Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
