Creativity Support in Generative AI
The position is open for appointment as of October 2026, or soon hereafter. The position is a three-year role, located in the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University's Technical Faculty for IT and Design. In addition, the project involves close collaboration with the Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology and involves one other PhD candidate and a postdoctoral researcher. The candidate’s workplace will be in Aalborg.

As part of this project, you will investigate the impact of generative AI on creative processes and design novel ways of integrating GenAI in professional design software. You will join the Human Augmentation and Collaboration research group, an active and supportive research group focused on designing and evaluating interactive systems that extend human capabilities in digital environments.
Your work tasks
The PhD candidate will study the needs of creatives in integrating AI decision support during design ideation. Your work will combine requirements gathering with interactive system development and empirical evaluation in real world settings. You will have the opportunity to shape the project based on your interests and in collaboration with a leading architectural firm. The candidate is expected to publish in leading Human-Computer Interaction venues.

Your competencies

You hold a master’s degree in human-computer interaction, computer science, interaction design, applied artificial intelligence, or a related field. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating strong collaboration skills and the ability to acquire new skills. Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English are essential. Prior experience with HCI research, digital prototyping, and/or AI tools is an advantage.

Qualification requirements

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19, 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

As part of the PhD study, you are among other things required to complete PhD courses corresponding to 30 ECTS, gain experience with teaching or other forms of knowledge dissemination and complete an external research stay outside of Aalborg University, preferably 3-6 months at a foreign research institution.
Who we are
The selected candidate will be part of the Human-Augmentation and Collaboration research group within the Human-Centered Computing Section at Aalborg University’s Department of Computer Science. We provide an ambitious and supportive research environment focused on the design and evaluation of interactive systems that extend human cognitive, affective, and collaborative capabilities in digital environments. Our research examines how emerging digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, social computing, and mobile devices, impact both individual experiences and practices as well as collaboration within and across groups.

Salary and terms of employment
The employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (in Danish).

Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement) (in Danish)

There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
