Technician for Neutron Chopper Systems

ESSE - European Spallation Source ERIC

Reference number ESD-50891

Apply

The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:
The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are seeking to appoint a Technician to join our Neutron Chopper Systems group. A neutron chopper is a specialised electromechanical machine that can shape a particle beam using disks that rotate at very high speeds (20,000 rpm). The Chopper Systems Group is responsible for management of design, engineering, manufacturing maintenance and operation of the neutron chopper systems.

As a Technician for Neutron Chopper Systems at ESS, you will be an integral part of the Neutron Chopper Group, contributing to the forefront of scientific research. This role involves a hands-on approach to the maintenance, assembly, manufacturing, installation, and testing of both electrical and mechanical systems that are critical to the operation of neutron choppers. Your technical expertise will be essential in advising mechanical engineers on best practices and production methods, as well as in handling and operating workshop equipment including manual drills, lathes, mills, and soldering tools.

You will also play a key role in executing equipment test programs, procuring parts, and ensuring that the neutron chopper facilities are maintained to the highest standards. The role also includes responsibilities in R&D, quality assurance processes, and safety management within the workshop environment. Additionally, you will contribute to the administrative aspects and documentation required to keep operations running smoothly. Occasional travel and work abroad may be necessary as part of this dynamic and varied role.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:
To thrive with us in the Choppers Group, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty!

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced technician with a strong background in technical workshops and a proven ability to handle complex, precision equipment. Ideally, you have a certified professional education in Mechanical or Mechatronic Technology as well as significant prior experience working in a highly technical or engineering environment.

Your mechanical dexterity and practical experience with workshop equipment, including clean areas and precision tools, make you adept at assembling complex parts and performing essential maintenance tasks. You possess a solid understanding of mechanical and electronic processes, with knowledge of dynamic balancing techniques and vacuum systems being an added advantage.

A commitment to safety is essential. You must have a strong safety record supported by formal training in relevant workshop activities. Experience in an international research environment is desirable, as is proficiency in English, with Swedish language skills being a bonus. Your attention to detail, adaptability, and ability to manage multiple tasks, combined with your collaborative spirit and dedication to maintaining a safe and efficient workspace, will make you a valuable addition to our team.

For this role, we need someone who can start as soon as possible. Shift work and occasional on-call duties will be required as necessary.

What can we offer?
Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

  • An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
  • A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
  • A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
  • Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
  • 25 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
  • Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
