The Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Health Technology (DTU Health Tech), invites applications for a professor position in the interdisciplinary field of biomedical engineering, biomaterials, and cellular engineering. This position will play a pivotal role in advancing DTU Health Technology’s mission to promote sustainable healthcare solutions, improve patient outcomes, and drive impactful health innovations for society. We seek candidate(s) who are ready to develop and promote their research field while creating transformative solutions through research, education, and collaboration with clinical and industrial partners.

The successful candidate’s research should encompass one or more of the fields:

  • Biomaterials Development: Leading the design, synthesis, and functionalization of innovative biomaterials that interact with biological systems for therapeutic, diagnostic, and regenerative applications. Research should focus on advancing materials that are biocompatible and promote cellular functions critical to improving patient outcomes.
  • Cellular Engineering and Regenerative Medicine: Pioneering new approaches to understand and harness cellular responses to engineered biomaterials. This includes developing bioactive scaffolds, encapsulation techniques, and advanced tissue-engineering solutions to support tissue growth, repair, and regeneration in ways that improve health outcomes and enhance quality of life.
  • Nano- and Micro-scale Engineering for Biomedical Applications: Conducting research at the nano- and microscale to create next-generation solutions in targeted drug delivery, biosensing, and personalized medicine. Applicants should possess expertise in creating biomaterials with precise features that enable better diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities, addressing key clinical needs.

Candidates must demonstrate an internationally recognized research profile, an outstanding publication record, and leadership in generating both fundamental knowledge and applied innovation within interdisciplinary, cross-sector research. The successful candidate will foster DTU Health Technology’s commitment to advancing foundational science and driving collaboration across academia, healthcare, and industry, with the ambition of translating research insights into impactful clinical and commercial solutions.

We invite applications from individuals committed to pioneering advancements in biomedical engineering, biomaterials, and or cellular engineering, with a clear vision for advancing the DTU Health Tech mission of improving human health and societal well-being through technological innovation.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated excellent achievements in research and teaching in an internationally recognized scientific environment, relative to the relevant career level. A university degree and a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, are prerequisites. Applicants should show a clear commitment to interdisciplinary research.

You hold a PhD in chemistry, physics, biophysics, or pharmacy, with internationally recognized expertise in biomedical engineering, biomaterials science, or cellular engineering. You strive to integrate advanced research and publishing activities with fostering collaborations and maximizing the impact of research results through engagement with external stakeholders. Additionally, you have a proven track record of securing research funding from both national and international programs. More specifically, you:

  • have documented and successful education experience at all levels (BEng, MSc, and PhD) within a university’s study programs,
  • are engaged in innovation and industrial collaboration, and the application of research results in commercial contexts, etc.,
  • understand the importance of interdisciplinary research collaboration across scientific disciplines, particularly the technical and health sciences.
  • are engaged in developing teaching curriculum within biomedical engineering, biomaterials science, and cellular engineering covering both fundamental and advanced aspects of the educational program.

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels.

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
