Light Systems Control Engineer for Neutral Atoms Quantum Computing

NQCP is establishing a talented and diverse international team to create a cutting-edge quantum programme in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. At the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, where the formulation of Quantum Mechanics was born 100 years ago, we aim to establish an international quantum computing programme that will drive research and innovations at multiple levels - from developing scalable quantum processor technologies to solutions for the quantum-classical control and readout interface, and all the way to quantum algorithms and applications. The long-term mission of the programme is todevelop fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware and quantum algorithms that solve life-science-relevant chemical and biological problems.

NQCP is looking for
A motivated light systems control engineer to drive the work on atomic control with integrated photonic systems. The role is anchored in the Neutral Atoms team to work on next-generation control and readout of atomic qubits for quantum computing. Here you will be a key person in our development of new photonic technologies for controlling single atoms. You will work across the research center in close collaboration with our Theory and Simulation, Nanofabrication, and Photonic Characterization groups.

Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities will include

  • Coordinate our new Light System Control lab space
  • Cross-team coordination within the research center
  • Scaling up electrical control systems for our atomic arrays
  • Managing data aspects and project coordination of the pilot line projects
  • Close collaboration with our bulk-optics quantum computing platform

Qualifications
You have

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior researchers or engineers
  • Strong organizational and project-planning skills
  • The ability to function as a bridge between scientific objectives and engineering implementation

We are looking for a person with technical expertise (e.g. and education in physics, photonics or electrical engineering) that includes some of the following qualifications:

  • An advanced understanding of laser systems, optical setups, and photonics engineering.
  • Experience with high-power and narrow-linewidth laser systems
  • Understanding of optical diagnostics and performance characterization
  • Experience designing and maintaining complex experimental control systems
  • Knowledge of real-time hardware control, synchronization, and automation
  • Experience with FPGA-, microcontroller-, or embedded-based control systems
  • Strong programming skills relevant to laboratory automation and control
  • Experience with AMO physics, quantum optics, photonics, or precision measurement systems
  • Familiarity with ultracold atom or quantum technology experiments is an advantage

The ideal candidate has some background in systems engineering with

  • Ability to identify bottlenecks and dependencies across optics, electronics, software, and experimental operation
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in large-scale experimental environments
  • Experience documenting systems, workflows, and operational procedures

Terms of salary and employment
The employment and salary are made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

Employment will be as academic officer or special consultant. The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working hours are 37 hours per week on average and the working hours are flexible. The position is limited until 31st December 2029

Appointment will be subject to receipt of a security clearance.
